Paediatric Echocardiograms

Echocardiogram is a special scan of the heart similar to an ultrasound. It is a non-invasive, painless procedure which takes about half an hour to complete. It is usually performed in outpatient department and it is preferable for child to remain still and quiet during the procedures. Young infants are usually distracted to keep them calm and as still as possible.

This procedure is very useful in making a correct diagnosis of congenital heart disease. It also helps doctors to reassure the parents of children with innocent heart murmurs about the normality of their heart. But all children with innocent heart murmurs do not require an echocardiogram.
